March 24th, 2011Playing a role at higher velocity
by David Botsford
Again and again in different approaches to metaphysics, the question arises: what frequency of energy vibration (or velocity) are you aligned with? If you are unhappy with your current alignment, the first thing is to forgive yourself. Recognize that every level of velocity “works” in some context. Every problem was once a solution. Your task is simply to find that level which corresponds to the goals you are seeking. The process known in neuro-linguistic programming as “modeling” is a method of doing that.
Group dancing rituals in traditional societies, such as kris dancing in Bali and voodoo ceremonies in Haiti, enable individuals to identify with powerful symbolic figures by wearing dramatic costumes and masks. When Napoleon wanted to declare himself emperor, he employed an actor to teach him how an emperor would move and talk. Charlie Chaplin once anonymously entered a Charlie Chaplin look-alike contest. He came third. The two men who beat him had copied his appearance and mannerisms so precisely that they were more convincing than the real thing. We can learn to be about as good as world-class performers in any field by modeling (copying) their internal thoughts and external behaviors. People who want to improve their sports, their musical performance and level of financial achievement find models whom they can copy.
Think of someone who has the level of velocity you are seeking. This could be someone you know personally or someone famous whom you have never met. It could even be a fictional character. It should be someone you know a quite a lot about and feel a connection with. If you have videos or interviews of this person, or articles about him or her, look through them before doing this exercise.
Play some music which reflects the velocity you want to achieve. Imagine a scrapbook – like the scrapbooks you probably used as a child – containing photos, news clippings and objects which tell the life story of the individual you want to model. Browse through this imaginary scrapbook and get a sense of this person’s inner life and energy.
Now imagine that you are an actor portraying this person on stage or screen. What do you think the individual would experience internally at moments of high (and low) velocity? As far as possible, draw on your own “emotion memory” of analogous experiences from your own life. Mimic the person’s external expressions and movements as closely as possible. “Live the part” in the style of a method actor, such as Robert de Niro or Meryl Streep. Imagine that you are experiencing episodes from the person’s life which shaped them and their beliefs. Now imagine that you are being interviewed by a reporter who asks you (“playing the part” of this individual) how you achieve your results. Let the answer come spontaneously from within.
Having created this role, shift your attention to the goals you want in your own life. Staying in character, imagine making those goals a reality through action at this new level of velocity.
